Every September, SAMHSA sponsors Recovery Month to increase national awareness and understanding of mental and substance use issues and celebrate the people who recover.
Recovery Month promotes the societal benefits of prevention, treatment, and recovery for mental and substance use disorders, celebrates people in recovery, lauds the contributions of treatment and service providers, and promotes the message that recovery in all its forms is possible. Recovery Month spreads the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can and do recover.
There are millions of Americans whose lives have been transformed through recovery and Recovery Month provides a vehicle for everyone to celebrate these accomplishments, just as we celebrate health improvements made by those who are managing other health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, and heart disease.
NCADD was one of the founding sponsors of Recovery Month and has been an active Recovery Month Planning Partner ever since, assisting in the development, dissemination, and collaboration of materials, promotion and event sponsorship. Now in its 26th year, Recovery Month promotes the message that recovery in all of its forms is possible and encourages citizens to take action to help expand and improve the availability of effective prevention, treatment and recovery services for those in need.
Each September, local NCADD Affiliates across the country join with tens of thousands of other prevention, treatment, and recovery programs and organizations to celebrate National Recovery Month, hosting hundreds of local community events including picnics, rallies, walks, informational luncheons and dinners. Through these events, the gains made by those in recovery are highlighted, increasing awareness and understanding about the diseases of mental and substance use disorders.
Recovery Month 2017
The theme for Recovery Month 2017 is Join the Voices for Recovery: Strengthen Families and Communities and is intended to highlight the value of family and community support throughout recovery and to invite individuals in recovery and their family members to share their personal stories and successes in order to encourage others.
