The Association of Persons Affected by Addiction (APAA), Dallas, TX

HISTORY: The Association of Persons Affected by Addiction (APAA) is a nationally renowned, award-winning, grass-roots, peer-driven and peer-led recovery community organization in Dallas, Texas. (Note: “Peers” is the term we use to refer to our peers, those we serve, who are in recovery from substance use.) In 1998, a local non-profit recovery advocacy organization called Dallas Helps, in association with a dedicated group of peers in recovery from alcohol and/or other drug addiction, formed the association now known as APAA. Over the next three years, this newfound organization grew from infancy and quickly established its mission, vision and values. NCADD San Fernando Valley, CA: February 2015

Beliefs: In a society that continually promotes alcohol and drug use at every level, the need to provide education on the dangers of alcohol and/or drug abuse and its effect on the family has never been greater. We believe this education needs to begin as early as possible in people's lives. Properly educated, children and youth are much more resistant to being susceptible to use or abuse alcohol or drugs. While we support the disease concept of alcoholism as defined by the American Medical Association, NCADD-SFV also believes that alcoholism is centered in the mutual relationship between the individual and their environment rather than centered solely in the individual. We know its effects on the family are just as devastating. We know alcoholism and/or drug addiction is a family disease.   Visit the NCADD of the San Fernando Valley website: http://www.ncadd-sfv.org/ To Find More of NCADD's Affiliates, Search Here: http://bit.ly/FindAffiliateNCADD
