The Addiction Resource Council (ARC), NCADD’s Waukesha, WI Affiliate, offers various services to adults and families with alcohol dependence and/or drug addiction problems. Here are some of them. Operating While Intoxicated (OWI)/Driver Safety Plan ProcessFor those who have been convicted of operating a vehicle while under the influence, the Council offers a program that will help the individual maintain driving privileges as well as educating and addressing any substance use issues. The process begins with an assessment, a requirement for all individuals convicted of operating while under the influence. The assessment includes an interview to identify alcohol/drug use habits and to develop a Driver Safety Plan (DSP). The DSP offers the individual an understanding of his/her alcohol/drug habits, provides education or treatment opportunities, and includes referrals to other agencies. The Beach Cities Prevention Community Council (PCC) is a community coalition formed in response to the high drinking rates of underage youth, particularly of youth ages 12-17, in the Los Angeles County beach cities of Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Manhattan Beach. Environmental factors including social norms, affluence, stress, a dense concentration of alcohol-licensed retailers, and local law enforcement policies contribute to the significantly higher youth drinking rates in the beach cities as compared with state averages. Behavioral Health Services, Inc., an Affiliate of NCADD (BHS/NCADD) responded by organizing the PCC as a viable intervention approach to mobilize the beach cities communities toward environmental social change. The goal was to use traditional grassroots community organizing efforts to develop a strong coalition of community stakeholders to implement evidence-based programs and strategies to reduce access and availability of alcohol to underage youth. SPOTLIGHT: Des Moines, IA Affiliate’s Bilingual Program

Employee & Family Resources (EFR), NCADD’s Des Moines, IA Affiliate, provides bilingual individual and family counseling, along with in-home support to families, through its “Para Ti Programa.” Serving Polk, Dallas and Warren counties, EFR provides the support in Spanish and English to individuals and families when they face life’s challenges. The program offers in-office appointments with a master’s degreed therapist who is bilingual and bicultural, in addition to a bachelor’s degreed counselor who is available for home visits, school visits, and assistance in the community. Clients may access both services, and just the one they need by calling the Affiliate. Para Ti was founded to serve the growing Latino community in Central Iowa. The program helps people address challenges of depression and other emotional issues, family or marital problems, legal or financial concerns, or substance abuse issues. SPOTLIGHT: Rockaway, NJ Affiliate’s Children’s Programs

Prevention is Key, the Rockaway, NJ Affiliate, offers three prevention programs aimed at children. Forest Friends is a developmental puppet program designed to help children learn basic life skills and character enhancement that they will use their entire life. Each session includes a story portrayed by animal puppets, a discussion and an activity to reinforce the lesson conveyed by the story. There are six 15-20 minute stories; two are presented at each session over a three week period. The stories build off one another so that each presentation teaches a lesson while reinforcing previous lessons. All eyes are locked on the lovable puppets that take center stage. The children can identify with the realistic situations the puppets encounter and learn how to emotionally deal with similar situations in their own life. Anuvia Prevention & Recovery Center, NCADD’s Charlotte, NC Affiliate, offers a range of programs for youth, including prevention and treatment. Programs are available in school and community settings as well as through an outpatient treatment setting. In general, the goals of these programs are to support youth in developing strong social skills to help them in avoiding alcohol, tobacco and other drug use or to treat adolescents who have a substance use issue. Prevention programs generally consist of lessons that include motivational activities, social skills training, and decision making components that are delivered through group discussions, games, role-playing exercises, videos and worksheets. Most programs are available to be delivered in English or Spanish. The National Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence—Orange County in Lake Forest, CA has, among its major goals, to provide information, education, prevention, and referral in eliminating alcohol, tobacco and other drug-related problems in its community. Studies have shown that teens who consistently learn about the risks of alcohol, marijuana and drugs from their parents are 50% less likely to use those substances. Residential ProgramThe inpatient program is a three-month comprehensive, multi-phase residential program based on the American Society of Addiction Medicine’s (ASAM) criteria. This program utilizes cognitive-behavioral, rational emotive and motivational enhancement therapies and includes: A structured environment with individual and group counseling by qualified professionals;Housing facilities for men and women;Nutritionally balanced meals;Involvement in Alcoholic’s Anonymous and other 12 Step Programs;Life Skills Program which includes career counseling, job readiness training and job placement assistance. The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence—Greater Detroit Area (NCADD-GDA) is known for serving many of Metro Detroit’s most talented youth. NCADD-GDA’s Youth Prevention programs target under-served, economically disadvantaged youth ages 10-21. The programs’ mission is to provide a safe environment where youth receive support and resources needed to be drug-free, attain academic success, and develop social responsibility.
