SPOTLIGHT: Tarrytown, NY Affiliate’s Adolescent Impaired Driving Prevention Program

Student Assistance Services Corp, an NCADD Affiliate located in Tarrytown NY, and servicing all of Westchester County, implements the ROADD (Reduce Our Adolescent Drinking/Drugging and Driving) Program. ROADD is an educational program aimed at preventing alcohol and other drug impaired driving among high school students. It is funded by the Westchester County Office of Drug Prevention and STOP-DWI, which in turn receives monies from the fines paid by convicted drunk drivers. The ROADD Program is free to participating public, private, and parochial schools in Westchester County. It is provided for two years at a school and then is offered to other schools on a rotating basis. Students receive six class sessions conducted by a ROADD Health Educator. The classes consist primarily of sophomores and juniors, and are usually delivered through the school's health class, or another appropriate subject. SPOTLIGHT: Buffalo, NY Affiliate’s Tomorrows’ Leaders Camp

The Erie County Council for the Prevention of Alcohol and Substance Abuse (ECCPASA) offers “Tomorrows’ Leaders Camp” (TLC), a fun, yet educational camp that provides interactive, hands-on experiences that will teach and enhance the leadership qualities of its young participants. TLC is an extension of community and school-based prevention programming and services that are provided to youth throughout Erie County. Summer camp provides an opportunity to continue to teach prosocial skills throughout the summer. Current research shows that substance abuse prevention is more effective when it is paired with education, social skills, decision making skills and refusal skills. Tomorrows’ Leaders Camp has developed its curriculum based on the current research along with evidence-based programs and is designed to address the needs of children ages 8 to 12 years old. Mornings at the main office of the Alcohol/Drug Council of North Carolina (ADCNC), you will find Keith Kimbro and Danny O’Brian at their desks, telephone headsets fixed and listening intently to the person who has called for their assistance. “Sometimes we have to just teach family members you can’t love away this disease. We spend lot of time sharing facts about substance use disorders that the public doesn’t understand,” states Kimbro. Danny adds, “Everyday this job allows me to give back what was given to me! I am so grateful.” Since 1988. the Alcohol/Drug Council of North Carolina has been working to advocate for people with substance use disorders through its education programs. SPOTLIGHT: Santa Barbara’s Drug Court Programs

The Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, NCADD’s Santa Barbara Affiliate, offers drug court programs as alternatives to incarceration. One of these programs, the Clean and Sober Court, was developed in conjunction with the Santa Barbara Police Department to provide nonviolent misdemeanor or felony offenders who plead guilty to their crime a chance to receive alcohol and drug treatment rather than face incarceration. The program offers a non-adversarial courtroom atmosphere where a single judge and a dedicated team of court officers and staff work together to break the cycle of drug abuse and criminal behavior. After an initial "dryout" in jail, clients are referred to an outpatient or residential treatment program, and/or a sober living facility. Adult offenders with felonies or misdemeanors participate in a minimum of six months of treatment. Julie Dostal is Executive Director of the LEAF Council on Alcoholism and Addictions. LEAF, based in Oneonta, New York, is dedicated to helping create a community where children and adults can live in healthy environments that are free from the effects of alcoholism and other addictive diseases. Earlier in January, Julie was named as one of four 2015 Citizens of the Year for “Fighting the Scourge”. Julie and the other honorees were recognized for fighting a heroin epidemic that had ravaged Oneonta County. SPOTLIGHT: Lumberton, NJ Affiliate’s Wellness Initiative for Senior Education (WISE)

Prevention Plus of Burlington County, Inc. offers a program designed to celebrate healthy aging, as well as to provide health information and offer resources for seniors. The program, called WISE (Wellness Initiative for Senior Education), is a substance abuse prevention and wellness program targeting older adults created by the New Jersey Prevention Network (NJPN) of which Prevention Plus is a member. WISE promotes health through six education sessions that address high-risk behaviors in older adults. It is designed to help older adults celebrate healthy aging, make healthy lifestyle choices and avoid substance abuse. The curriculum is designed to take place once a week over a six-week period. Rochester Affiliate’s Hispanic Prevention Education Program

The Hispanic Prevention Education Program (HPEP) of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence-Rochester Area provides increased awareness about chemical dependency and its impact on the Hispanic community; evidence-based education; support; information and referral. The program recognizes and respects the cultural distinctions of the Hispanic community. HPEP provides community presentations for adults and youth; information and referral, along with printed resources for parents and youth in Spanish and English. Services of the program include: Botvin’s LifeSkillsTraining (LST)--An evidence-based program curriculum for multiple age/grade levels: Elementary, middle, and high school. SPOTLIGHT: New Orleans Affiliate’s Re-Entry Program

The Council on Alcohol & Drug Abuse for Greater New Orleans (CADA), offers substance abuse treatment and supportive services for individuals returning to the community following incarceration. It is called CADA Re-entry Program, or CRP. The aim of CRP is to break the cycle of criminal behavior, substance abuse and recidivism by combining psychoeducational support groups and transitional planning in correctional institutions with effective community-based treatment recovery and reentry-related services. The program is designed to bridge the gap in aftercare by transitioning from reentry into outpatient substance abuse treatment with a heavy emphasis on individualized case management. With funding from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), CRP works to expand substance abuse treatment and related health services available to ex-offenders in the community by providing referrals and follow-up to substance abuse treatment programs.
