SPOTLIGHT: Waukesha, WI Affiliate Celebrates Recovery Month 2012

(ARC), local NCADD Affiliate in Waukesha, WI, partnered with the Oconomowoc Chamber of Commerce to host a breakfast event. It was part of the Business over Breakfast Series sponsored by the Chamber's Women in Business Network and featured ARC Executive Director and NCADD board member Claudia Roska, along with guest speaker, Mariah Haberman, the reigning Miss Wisconsin Central. Miss Haberman's personal platform, "A Shot of Reality: Alcohol Addiction," stems from her coping with a mother battling alcoholism and the death of her stepfather, who was killed in 2007 as the result of a crash caused while driving intoxicated. The audience, comprised of local business leaders, was closely engaged while Miss Haberman shared a heartfelt story of her mother's family history that included multi-generational addiction,...

Nearly 200 Chautauqua County students did their part to raise alcoholism awareness this year. One walked away $100 richer last March with more recognition on the way.

Sherman Central School junior Julia Rater won the 11th annual Chautauqua Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Council Alcohol (CASAC) Awareness Month Poster Contest. She beat out 11 fellow finalists and 195 total entrants to win the prize.

SPOTLIGHT: NCADD Affiliate LICADD (NY) Introduces I-STOP

ISTOP Press ConferenceOn June 27, cameras flashed at the Mineola office of the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), the NCADD Affiliate serving Nassau and Suffolk counties in New York State, as New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced passage of the new I-STOP legislation.

The Internet System for Tracking Over-Prescription (I-STOP) is the first of its kind legislation that, among other things monitors prescriptions and requires doctors and pharmacists to check patient prescription history before supplying drugs. "It targets the people and problems that lead to prescription drug abuse," says Schneiderman.

SPOTLIGHT: NCADD Affiliate SAARA Center for Recovery (Va) Launches Telephone Recovery Support


SaaraTelephone Recovery Support (TRS) helps people in recovery stay in recovery! The SAARA Center for Recovery is now offering weekly peer-to-peer telephone recovery support services to people early in recovery.

Trained volunteers make weekly calls to consenting participants to check in and see how they are progressing in their recovery.

TRS helps reduce relapse and enhances recovery, not only for the recoveree, but also for the volunteer calling.

Discussing his excitement of the newly launched program, one of SAARA's TRS volunteers stated, "When I was early in my recovery, no one ever called me when I was scared and needed to talk to someone. I remember wishing that someone would call me and offer some help. Being in recovery, and having the TRS program, is a perfect way of giving back by making that phone call that I never got."
