SPOTLIGHT: NCADD Middlesex's Footprints for Life listed on NREPP

school kids2NCADD's Footprints for Life™ program was recently approved for listing on The National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP). It is the first curriculum from New Jersey to receive this recognition and the only program designed specifically to promote social competencies in early elementary school students to be listed.

NREPP is a searchable online registry of mental health and substance abuse interventions which have been reviewed and rated by independent reviewers.

Founded in 2004 by Hanover resident John Shinholser, The McShin Foundation is NCADD's Richmond Affiliate and Virginia's leading non-profit, full-service Recovery Community Organization (RCO), committed to serving individuals and families in their fight against Substance Use Disorders (SUDs).

While providing the tools for recovering individuals to create positive lifestyles, it aims to spread the word of recovery and educate families, communities, and government regarding SUDs as well as reduce the stigma attached to them. Following is an example of its success.

Spotlight: Madison County, NY Council Youth Win National Award

Main imageReality Check is a New York State youth led movement aiming to reduce youth exposure to tobacco marketing. Recently, Madison-Oneida-Herkimer County Reality Check, operated by the NCADD Affiliate Madison County Council on Alcoholism & Substance Abuse, Inc., known as BRiDGES, was honored by Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids and recognized as the National Youth Advocate of the Year winners in the group category.

The Youth Advocates of the Year Awards, sponsored by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, are designed to honor the outstanding work of young advocates who have taken the lead in holding the tobacco companies accountable for their efforts to market products to youth.

Spotlight: Coalition’s Kick-Off Harnesses Community’s Strengths at Covina, CA Affiliate

pomona - image 1Partnership for a Positive Pomona, or P³, got off to a celebrated start early this year with its Coalition Kick-Off event at a local community center.

In attendance was a diverse group of 59 individuals drawn from across many sectors of the community, including schools, parents, youth, law enforcement, youth-serving organizations, alcohol and drug recovery providers, media, local and County government, health care providers and Pomona residents. The coalition initially began with the local network of substance abuse recovery providers.

SPOTLIGHT: Recovery Resources, Cleveland OH Affiliate, Reaches Women & Children

cleveland-mom childRecovery Resources is known throughout Northeastern Ohio for its gender-specific intensive outpatient program designed for women with drug and/or alcohol addiction. Many of the Women and Family Services clients have been referred by the Cuyahoga County Department of Children and Family Services after having their children removed from the home, or may be at risk of having their children removed.

The Women and Family Services program is unique in that it treats addiction in the context of the whole of a woman's life. In addition to drug and/or alcohol addiction treatment, the program offers classes in nutrition, parenting, vocational preparation and placement, and case management services. For preschool age children of women in treatment, early childhood prevention services are provided during the school year; during the summer, children up to age 12 are involved in activities designed to address the impact of addiction and reinforce academics. Transportation is provided in the form of bus tickets, to ensure participants are able to attend regularly.

SPOTLIGHT: South Bend, IN Affiliate Taking on Alcohol and Drugs in the Workplace

spotlight3The Alcohol and Addictions Resource Center (AARC), an NCADD Affiliate, is the proud parent organization for the Michiana Employee Assistance Program (MEAP). MEAP has been providing EAP services to Michiana area employers for over thirty-six years. You might ask just where is Michiana? Well, simply stated, the Michiana area covers part of northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan.

As you may know, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (NCADD) was the founder and developer of the Occupational Alcoholism program concept, starting in 1949. NCADD and its Affiliates have helped thousands of companies develop Occupational Alcoholism Programs (many of which were joint Labor-Management Programs).

SPOTLIGHT: A&E Partners With Torrance, CA Affiliate for Town Hall Meeting

Recently, NCADD South Bay had the opportunity to partner with NCADD National on a Town Hall Meeting sponsored by A&E's "Intervention," Charter Cable and The Salvation Army. The Town Hall meeting was filmed before a packed crowd at California State University Long Beach studio theater.

The evening program was moderated by Brad Pomerance (News Anchor for CNN/Charter Cable local news) and featured panelists Candy Finnegan from "Intervention," Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell, Dr. Dennis Fisher of Cal State Long Beach and NCADD South Bay's Executive Director, Michael Ballue.

SPOTLIGHT: St. Louis, MO Affiliate Fighting Heroin In A Unique Way

heroin demonstrationOver the past four or five years St. Louis has unfortunately become a destination for heroin traffickers whose target is young, affluent suburban teens. As is always the case with heroin, overdose deaths began to mount up, each year worse than the year before.

In 2010 we had over 200 death overdose deaths among young people in the greater municipal area. We felt it was time for the council to do something. We asked the Missouri Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse (ADA) for funding help in order to craft a public awareness campaign to alert parents what was going on and, at the same time begin the process of better educating youth and raising their awareness, as well. ADA was able to come through with some limited funding, which we were very appreciative of. We got right to work.

The first thing we did was create a concept and a website built around that concept.

A Pregnant Woman Never Drinks Alone- FAS PosterNCADD- Rochester Area has been dedicated to a broad-based public education effort on alcohol and pregnancy for many years, including education, training, local media campaign and our Parent Networking Support Group. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is an umbrella term describing the range of effects that can occur when a fetus is exposed to alcohol. Effects may include physical, mental, behavioral, and/or learning disabilities with life-long implications. Disabilities due to prenatal exposure range from mild to severe.
